FRB-Cesab - Datascientist
Pavanee ANNASAWMY

Pavanee Angelee Annasawmy joined the FRB at CESAB in January 2024, as a Data-scientist within the BLUE JUSTICE CESAB group, where she will build on her previous experience in analysis of multidisciplinary oceanographic cruise datasets and statistical modelling.

Pavanee’s research focuses on using multidisciplinary tools to study deep sea communities. She graduated with a co-badged PhD from the University of Montpellier (France) and the University of Cape town (South Africa). During her PhD, she shed new light on the influence of seamounts in the Indian ocean on the distribution, composition and trophic relationships of deep sea communities. She then carried out a first postdoc at the Seychelles Fishing Authority and Géosciences Environnement Toulouse, and another at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA), before receiving the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship from the Horizon Europe programme. The projects NEAT and MAGMA, which she currently supervises, aim at pushing the traditional technological and scientific boundaries to better study deep sea communities.

In this context, and with her recent nominations for the 3rd World Ocean Assessment by the United Nations and as the ambassador of citizen science projects representing France, she aspires to combine her scientific expertise and interests in socio-economical aspects to build interdisciplinary partnerships in order to push the technological and scientific boundaries to progress our understanding of the deep ocean.
