{"id":2239,"date":"2019-01-31T12:32:58","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T11:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fondationbiodiversite.fr\/la-frb-en-action\/programmes-et-projets\/le-cesab\/free\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T17:15:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T16:15:21","slug":"free","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fondationbiodiversite.fr\/en\/the-frb-in-action\/programs-and-projects\/le-cesab\/free\/","title":{"rendered":"FREE 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rarity has always fascinated conservation and evolutionary biologists with the goal to uncover species characteristics causing extinction risk. <strong>Recently, some results suggest that rare species may over-contribute to the diversity of traits within communities thus supporting irreplaceable roles while others show that rare species are functionally <\/strong><\/span><strong>redundant with\u00a0common species.\u00a0<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond the rarity of species, the rarity of functions played by species, coined as functional rarity, is thus key to understand the impact of biodiversity decline on ecosystem functioning. However, functional rarity still lacks a clear definition and a quantitative framework while its emergence and maintenance within communities is largely unknown.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The aim of the\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FREE\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">working group is to advance the concept of functional rarity and examine the <strong>causes and consequences of functional rarity from local to global scales<\/strong>. <em><strong>FREE<\/strong><\/em>&#8216;s <\/span>first results show that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>common assumptions notwithstanding, <strong>rare species can play unique and essential ecological roles,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>rare species are already more threatened by humans than ecologically common species<\/strong> and will be more impacted by future climate change,<\/li>\n<li>hotspots of functional rarity differ from the areas where the most vulnerable species are found.
