{"id":15299,"date":"2021-06-24T17:54:21","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T15:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondationbiodiversite.fr\/?page_id=15299"},"modified":"2026-03-30T18:16:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T16:16:02","slug":"bioshifts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fondationbiodiversite.fr\/en\/the-frb-in-action\/programs-and-projects\/le-cesab\/bioshifts\/","title":{"rendered":"BIOSHIFTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is now indisputable that plants and animals are responding to climate change by undergoing the largest redistribution of life on Earth for tens of thousands of years. <strong>Yet, recent studies have found that species range shifts are highly idiosyncratic and that climate warming alone is unlikely to explain the rates of biodiversity redistribution. <\/strong>Whereas intrinsic species traits (e.g., thermal tolerance, dispersal ability, ecological specialization) and evolutionary mechanisms (e.g., adaptive potential) are expected to influence both trailing\u2010edge contractions and leading\u2010edge expansions, other extrinsic non\u2010climatic factors (e.g., habitat fragmentation, human pressures) may also constrain or exacerbate range shift processes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>BIOSHIFTS<\/em><\/strong> <strong>will\u00a0 fill\u00a0 this\u00a0 knowledge\u00a0 gap\u00a0 by\u00a0 addressing\u00a0 the\u00a0 fundamental\u00a0 question of\u00a0 how contemporary climate\u2010driven range shifts arise from the interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms.<\/strong> <strong><em>BIOSHIFTS<\/em><\/strong> will\u00a0 upgrade,\u00a0 build\u00a0 upon,\u00a0 and\u00a0 leverage\u00a0 the\u00a0 power of a\u00a0 comprehensive\u00a0 geo\u2010database compiling\u00a0 range\u00a0 shifts\u00a0 documented\u00a0 in\u00a0 marine,\u00a0 freshwater and\u00a0 terrestrial\u00a0 ecosystems\u00a0 over\u00a0 recent decades,\u00a0 together\u00a0 with\u00a0 open\u00a0 source\u00a0 databases\u00a0 of\u00a0 species\u00a0 traits\u00a0 and\u00a0 innovative\u00a0 phylogenetic comparative methods.
