He first began studying pelagic bacteria and viruses in polar, temperate, and tropical oceans. His research then shifted toward the interactions between marine micro- and macro-organisms, aiming to describe the taxonomic, physiological, and phylogenetic aspects of bacterial communities associated with animals, as well as their stability, resilience, and both beneficial and harmful roles for the host. His recent projects take a multidisciplinary approach (microbial ecology, chemistry, and anthropology) to assess the overall risk of the microbiome associated with plastics in the Indian Ocean. Ultimately, these projects aim to define awareness and management actions adapted to the socio-cultural context in Madagascar and in the five member states of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). He currently leads an ANR project (VectoPlastic) in Madagascar, as well as a regional AFD project (IOC-ExPLOI) in Mauritius, R\u00e9union, Madagascar, Seychelles, and Comoros.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Other Roles<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thierry Bouvier<\/strong> was also a founding member of the MARBEC research unit in 2015 and served as deputy director during its first mandate. He has been an appointed member of section 20 of CNRS-INEE, project officer for INEE on Experimental Ecology Infrastructures and later on International Affairs.
