The world is struggling with a major pandemic\u202ffor\u202fmore than a year, with dramatic consequences in terms of human lives lost and economic costs. But paradoxically, this crisis reduced\u202f(temporally)\u202four impact on the planet, and thus might have also some positive consequences on biodiversity.\u202fNow that our economies are starting over,\u202fthe question is now\u202fmuch we will have learned from the\u202fCovid\u202fcrisis and its side-effects on the environmental crisis, so we do\u202fnot\u202fgo back to\u202fthe\u202fbusiness-as-usual\u202fGIEC scenario\u202fand\u202fend up losing\u202fon both sides.\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:555}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:555}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The scientific community took the opportunity of the\u202fCovid\u202fcrisis to experiment how science could be made\u202fthrough virtual interactions. Synthesis centers have been at the forefront of this \u201cexperimentation\u201d as our core activity is to gather scientists from all over the world. We had to rapidly adapt\u202f<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to supporting fully virtual working groups\u202f<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and after a year we can conclude that\u202f<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">virtual\u00a0meetings, while providing a bridge during the pandemic, cannot replace intense, in-person immersion meetings\u202f(<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-021-01521-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Srivastava et al., 2021<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). Science and particularly synthesis science is also about social interactions between\u202fpeople :\u202fthese direct interactions fuel collective and creative\u202fthinking\u202fneeded for groups to\u202fwork on what is planned, and\u202fmore importantly imagine the unplanned. But, as scientists and more importantly environmental scientists, we\u202fmust\u202fbe at the forefront of the paradigm shifts our societies need to go through,\u202fto mitigate the environmental crisis.\u202fWe are\u202fthus\u202fthinking of\u202fre-organizing biodiversity synthesis centers in regional\u202f<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hubs<\/span><\/i><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where research teams within each geographic region could meet simultaneously as in-person working groups.\u202fThese \u201cregional hubs\u201d\u202fwould\u202falso coordinate virtually with each other among\u202f<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">synthesis centers. The environmental and biodiversity crisis,\u202fare\u202fnot at\u202ftheir\u202fclimax,\u202fthey are\u202fonly beginning. This newsletter reflect this rich activity and the best is yet to come with many new groups starting this year and\u202fnext. I would like here to thanks thoroughly the CESAB and FRB staff as well as the CESAB scientific committee\u202ffor the incredible work\u202fthey already\u202fhave achieved this year; and thanks the\u00a0whole\u00a0FRB and its founders\u202fto make all this possible.\u202fWith the 4 projects funded in the 2020 call and the upcoming 2 projects funded\u202fvia\u202four France-Brazil joint call, the CESAB will host 20 active groups by 2022. This strong and positive dynamics reflect\u202four collective\u202fwillingness\u202fto fulfill the need for synthesis in biodiversity science as well as the incredible quality and maturity of the scientific community on this fundamental issue.
